Free Organic Weed Control

Free Organic Weed Control

Unlike regular weed control, using a chemical product which is both sometimes dangerous, and always expensive, organic weed control can be and very inexpensive. It’s true you can also buy expensive organic weedkillers but to be honest these are not very effective.

Of course the original weed control is either hoeing or manually pulling weeds up by hand. Either of these are very effective, but a little hard on the back. It will also have to be done every week to keep the weeds under control.

The easiest organic weed control you can apply is plain old newspaper. It is an organic product itself. (Stay away from the shiny colorful inserts, as the ink contains heavy metals.) Regular newsprint will rot into the soil, but in the meantime will keep the soil moist. You should use 6 or more sheets of paper weighted down with compost, stones, or bricks, around the edges to keep it from blowing away.

Early Spring is the time to lay the paper down, before the weeds get a head start on you. The paper will eventually turn into a soft mash, at which time you can spade it into the soil which adds more organic material. This also encourages earth worms which adds to the quality of your soil. Sheets of cardboard from packing boxes is also organic, and is very effective, as it keeps out the light which in turn keeps weeds from sprouting.

You can also buy a commercial product for weed suppression but why spend hard-earned money when there is a free and readily available alternative?

Easy, free, healthy!
