Sopranos Characters – Meadow Soprano

*Spoiler alert*

Meadow Soprano, played by Jamie Lynn Sigler, was the daughter of Tony and Carmela Soprano on the HBO cable network show The Sopranos. Her character develops in many ways more than other characters on the show, largely because she is growing up. Her character has an interesting arc. At first, she doesn’t really appreciate what her father does for a living, then she starts to hate what he does, then she is slowly drawn into the world in a way that she herself doesn’t really notice.

At first, Meadow is vaguely aware that her father is a gangster, but isn’t really aware of the implications of that. She suspects that things are wrong at times, including when her father murders a man while they are on a trip searching for colleges. However, the full extent of her father’s profession doesn’t really hit her until Season 3, when she sees two dark aspects of her father. He first boyfriend is black, and her father is overtly racist towards him. However, this is completely forgotten when her second boyfriend, Jackie Jr., is murdered by the very mob that her father controls.

At this point, she completely breaks down, suspecting that her father is involved with Jackie Jr.’s death (he is). However, with time, she starts to rationalize away the death as a natural part of life in the mafia, and finds a completely non-mobbed up man, Finn. The two become engaged, but when he realizes that he has become complicit in the murder of a gay mobster, he quietly leaves her off screen.

The break up being off screen is important; Meadow simply doesn’t understand why she and Finn broke up. At this point it becomes clear to the audience that she is immersed enough in the mob world that she will scare anyone else away. She eventually becomes engaged to another mobster’s son, Patrick Parisi, and she intends to fight discrimination against Italian Americans. In order to deal with her father’s crimes she has had to rationalize that he father is actually the victim.
