Ageless Passion – Are You Too Old to Be Passionate?

Dreams and passions are ageless. If you decide that something is important enough, age is not an excuse. Your dream may take on a different look and flavor than originally thought but the essence remains true.

Because I often hear the comments “I’m too old to start that.” or “I’m retired.” I frequently use Mae’s story when I present ‘The 7 keys to Living a Passionate Life’.

Four years ago Mae L. decided to pursue the L.A. dream, an acting career. This was something Mae had thought about for a very long time- a passion now unleashed. There is nothing unusual here with the exception that Mae was 93 at the time. Her first casting call lead to a Sears commercial, then on to mad TV, and ads for Lexus and Chase bank. Mae is now 97 and has completed filming a small role in an untitled Ben Stiller movie.

There are many stories similar to Mae’s. The challenge is step out of your present comfort zone and stretch a bit to live life aligned with your passions.

Many leaders found themselves in this situation. They were passionate about improving their community and country and could usually be found in the background. There came a moment for each of them when they needed to make a decision for what they stood for.

One such leader is the current mayor of Atlanta, Shirley Franklin. Passionate about improving public policy she worked in that arena for many years. It wasn’t until she set aside her fears of failure and of not being perfect, that she contemplated running for public office. Mayor Franklin ran for office in her 50’s. To quote her,”…this is all a big surprise to me…It was a spiritual journey for me in some ways. It is impossible to offer limitless opportunities to young people if those of us who are older are not willing to take the risk….At some point, I looked into the mirror and said, “You cannot give another graduation or baccalaureate speech, or another pep talk to a young woman that she has no boundaries and no limits if you in fact are limiting yourself by your fear.”

Live your passion and be a leader by example no matter what age you are. Embrace ageless passion.
