Southern Italy – Molise Region

Molise is another central region of Italy. The capital city is Campobasso. To the north of this region lies Abruzzi, north-west is Lazio, south-west Campania and to the east the Adriatic Sea.

One important destination here is Campitello Matese which has a ski resort of about 40 km of slopes and many tracks. The station is also equipped with an artificial snow system. If you love mountain sports such as skiing, climbing and mountain-biking, you can visit the plateau of Matese which is at a height of 1450m.

Other important mountains around Matese are the Gallinola, Monte Croce and the Miletto which is the highest measuring 2050 meters. The mountains confine a big flat valley which during spring becomes a lake.

You might consider visiting Palazzo Ducale di Ripalimosani a small medieval village a few steps from Campobasso. Here you can still find the shops of craftsmen who for centuries have worked serving their lords.

Santuario dell’Addolorata in Castelpetroso is a Sactuary you might want to visit. You can locate it moving from Bojano towards Isernia. It is on a slope, surrounded by green wood and you cannot miss sight of it.

Molise also has beaches along the Adriatic coast. Termoli features the most beautiful and famous beaches of the region. That is where you will find most tourists looking for beach adventures. If you love aquatic sports, you may consider visiting the Rio Vivo beach lying at the south of Termoli.

Foods And Drinks

While on the coastline seafood is the basis for most dishes, it is not so in the interior zones where mutton, lamb and ewe are all favorite meats. Typical of Molise is the Diavolino red peppers used in tomato sauced Ragù. Molise is also known for its olive oil which is produced in small scale only for local consumption and the famous Brodetto soup using their local red mullet. Roasted pork and many kinds of salami are no exceptions here either. A variety of dishes served along the coast includes swordfish, clams, and anchovies.
