The Many Forms of Transportation in Hong Kong

The public transportation network of Hong Kong is unlike any other in the world. There are so many options for commuters, one could take a different form of transportation everyday of the week.

First of all, to make commuting easier and faster Hong Kong introduced the Octopus card in 1997. This is a card that money is deposited on and it is used to pay transportation fees.

Secondly, the most popular form of transportation is the Mass Transit Railway otherwise known as the subway. The MTR has over 85 stations located around Hong Kong. Trains run every 2 or 3 minutes which makes this a fast way to get around. Perhaps this is why 2.3 million passengers utilize the subway on a daily basis.

Third, another form of public transportation is a bus or minibus. Some major bus routes provide 24 hour services. Other than a bus one can also get around town via Tram. Although tram is slower moving, it is a cost effective way of getting around the city.

Next, almost everyone has taken a taxi at some time in their lives and the city has 3 different types of taxis. The red taxi travels around urban areas. The green taxi operates within the new territories. The blue taxi operates on Lantau Island.

Finally, if you are trying to get from Hong Kong to one of the nearby islands there is always a ferry ride. Ferry rides can be fun and inexpensive.

In conclusion, there are many forms of public transportation in Hong Kong, so why not try them all.
