Be SMART When You Set Your Goals

Be SMART When You Set Your Goals

You have to be really smart about what you do to plan future goals you want to accomplish through your life. If you read my blog regularly, you know how positive I am about everything. You can increase how much you are capable of, when you are positive about what you can accomplish.

The power of the mind is very underestimated. It’s a fact: people with positive energy, get more accomplished through life, compared to people that are very negative. You would never hear Bill Gates or Donald Trump saying “I can’t do that”. That’s why they are so successful. They would say “I can do that, let’s make it happen”. They both came from nothing. They were not born with money. They worked hard and accomplished their dreams one by one. Of course they were pushed around and told it wasn’t possible by other people. But they always had a positive attitude and they never quit. Great people never give up.

Do you have that greatness in you? You can accomplish greatness if you keep at it everyday. Just like a sports star that practices everyday. They are great because they practice everyday. You have to set out your daily goals like you would anything else. Do them everyday and get good at accomplishing them. Goals can help take you and your business to the next level. You work hard at each one until you accomplish that goal and move on to the next goal. It sounds very easy, but it can be devastating to your self confidence along the way. You will run in to all kinds of major distractions and road blocks. You have to stay strong and believe in what you are doing. Don’t let anything get in your way of the goals you want to accomplish.

When you set goals, you have to think of everything you want to accomplish and put it into a sequential order. Taking each step is important. But knowing what steps to take and when to take them can be even more important. Make each daily goal reachable. I have said this before; Nothing will happen if you make your daily goals unrealistic or unreachable. Think of everything from your resources to time spent each day. Studies show that people are more likely to accomplish their goals if they are measurable to that person. Another words, don’t over do it. That can be very discouraging in itself.

I read this a while back from a great positive thinker. Use the SMART system to map out your daily goals.

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Realistic

T – Timely

Specific is pretty obvious. But lots of people don’t make their goals specific at all. Map out precise and very detailed goals. Vague goals will only confuse you and throw your focus off track. A good example would be if you said “I want more sales this quarter”. Instead you should say ” I want to up my sales by __ percent”. Make the percentage specific and realistic to what you want to accomplish. Mapping out a specific plan will help you greatly.

Measurable is an important one. People like to see their goal and try to jump right to it. Some goals can’t be reached right away. You have to chip away at it everyday. Most people like us can’t jump through a hoop and be rich. We have to work hard for it. Make a chart or list so you can keep track of daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly sales. Compare all your data. Make necessary changes according to what works best.

Achievable is a good one to teach yourself. Making your goals achievable means to keep then within your reach. If you made 10 sales last quarter, it is unrealistic to say you will have 1 million sales this quarter. But, if you keep achieving your daily goals you will accomplish that goal later. People have a bad habit of destroying their goals by over expecting what will happen with their business. Then it turns out in disaster and they give up because of it. It is good to underestimate yourself once in a while. Just keep in mind to chip away at that main goal each and everyday. Don’t let it get away without achieving that goal.

Being Realistic is the one that may slap you in the face. Most people have a habit of being very dreamy and unrealistic when they map their goals out. Make sure what you want to accomplish is something that is possible to do. Look at it from all sides, from the consumer to if it is legal or not. Make sure you are mapping your daily goals to reach a realistic one. A good example would be; If you have to change laws in order to reach your goals; then it is probably a bad idea. Nothing is worse than trying to reach a goal that is impossible to reach. Especially if you are using a positive attitude to reassure yourself it can be accomplished.

Timely is the one that most people don’t like. You have to sacrifice and spend time on your goals every single day. Don’t procrastinate! Get off your butt when you have free time. Even if it is only 5 minutes here and there during the day. Don’t take any time off of your daily goals and accomplishments. At the same time; you have to be fair to yourself and only fit in what you can do for the day. Break each goal into one small, timely, task. One baby step at a time. Don’t do more than one goal at a time unless it is absolutely necessary.

When you break your goals into small, simple, tasks, they will be more appealing to accomplish. You will find more time to work on them. That’s what it’s all about. Making your goals concrete, set in stone, and as easy to do as possible. Don’t take on too much at once and you will never be discouraged away from your goals. Everyone has goals and dreams. Not many people can say they accomplished all of their goals and dreams when all is said and done. You have to work hard and never give up to be in that league of people. But it is not impossible!

Just don’t lose touch of your life responsibilities. Lots of people get lost in their work when they try and reach their goals. They may lose out on the good things in life. Don’t be that person that loses out. Enjoy your life, you only get one chance. I like to live by the saying of the great Benjamin Franklin; “Work like you are going to live to see one hundred years old. Play like you are going to die tomorrow.”
