How Was Samson Blinded in the Bible?

Samson’s life is ruined because he succumb to the lust of his flesh. He slept with a Philistine prostitute in Gaza. When the Philistines ambushed against him, he arose on midnight, took hold of the city gate doors and went up to the hill.

Later, Samson fell in love with another Philistine woman called Delilah. The Philistine rulers made a deal with Delilah to trick Samson into revealing the secret of his strength. Delilah failed in 3 attempts to trick Samson into revealing the secret of his strength but succeed in the 4th attempt. Samson couldn’t satnd her nagging and he revealed to her that his strength will be gone if his hair is cut.

The Philistines caught Samson and gouged out his eyes. Now, Samson had became blinded in both in his eyes. After that, they put him to grinding a mill. After a long time, Samson’s hair grew back. One day, when the Philistines demanded for Samson to come out to entertain them during a celebration in the temple of Dagon. After the performance, Samson asked a servant to lead him to the pillars that support the temple. He prayed for God to help him take revenge for one last time. He pushed the pillars and the temple collapsed, killing more Philistines than he had during his lifetime.

In the account of Samson, we can see that he did not really fulfilled his Nazirite vow. He touched unclean corpses such as the carcass of the lions. He committed fornication by sleeping with the prostitutes. He did not listen to his parents by marrying the woman from Timnah. The bible says we are to obey our parents and listen to them (Exodus 20:12; Colossians 3:20; Ephesians 6:1-3). Ultimately, he was captured due to his lust for a Philistine prostitute named Delilah.

We must always abide in God’s commandments (1 John 3:4; Revelation 22:14; John 15:10). To love God is to walk in his commandments (John 14:15; Revelation 14:12; Romans 7:12). Samson don’t have self control and he easily become tempted by the lust of his flesh (Matthew 5:28; Galatians 5:16; 1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5).

We are to put God first instead of following the lust of our bodies (Colossians 3:5; 1 John 2:16; 2 Timothy 2:22; Galatians 5:19-21). Eventually, Samson got punished for his sin (Romans 6:23). This shows us that all sins have consequences. God can use anyone, even a sinful person, to do his will (2 Timothy 2:20). If you have difficulty overcoming your lust, you can pray for God to give you strength overcome it (1 Corinthians 10:13; Romans 8:37).
