The Lost Heart of the Ocean: Marxist Criticism

“Near, far wherever you are” it is a song sang by Celine Dion that many people cried and reminiscence the death of Jack and many passengers of Titanic. This line vividly depicts how far or wherever is Jack is and the people who died on the Titanic they will still be remembered. Titanic is a movie written and directed by James Cameron it talks about the heart wrenching story of the sinking of Titanic. It was release in the year 1997 and still famous nowadays. Unfair treatment distance among the “mighty ones” and the poor, and how your social class affects how you live your life are some issues asserted in the film.

The movie starts with a guy named Jack is playing in a poker game and tickets to get on the Titanic are in the pot. Jack wins the game on a full house, and so he and his friend Fabrizio have to rush to make it in time and they got on the board. it also shows first class passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslett), her mother Ruth (Frances Fisher) and her fiance Cal Hockley. Rose is on the way to Philadelphia to marry Cal, an arrangement made by her mother to protect her status of wealth. Then Rose attempts to commit suicide by throwing herself from the Titanic. She is confronted by Dawson who convinces her to come up from the railing. They fell for each other fairly quickly when Rose was threatening to jump of the Titanic because of troubles in her life. Jack helped her of the ledge and saved her. Rose was already engaged to Caledon Hockley who was a rich ignorant man. Jack and Rose kept seeing each other on the boat even though Rose’s mother (Ruth) disapproved and was a rich snob just like Rose’s fiancé. One night while they were having fun on the lower levels of the ship, the Titanic hit a big iceberg they couldn’t avoid since it was much larger underwater than it appeared to be on the surface. That is when the Titanic began to sink so fast. All women and children were ask to climb aboard small boats while the men and some of the less fortunate poor people were left locked downstairs. Rose and Jack go down with the ship and Jack helps her onto a door that can support the weight of one person. While Jack is in the freezing water, they exchange loving words, and Jack dies of hypothermia. Once aboard the Carpathia, Rose gives her name as Rose Dawson. She saw Cal one more time frantically looking for her but hides her face in a blanket just as he looks in her direction. Rose then proceeds to do everything that her and Jack promised to do together, and lives her life.Back on Lovett’s ship, Rose walks to the side, produces the Heart of the Ocean and tosses it overboard. In the last scene, Rose is met by Jack on the grand staircase of the Titanic, they kiss and are applauded by those who were lost in the disaster.

In the end it turns out that the Swedish dudes who lost the poker game ended up winning their lives. and Jack’s dream of being a billionaire will just remain now just a dream and like the Titanic called The Ship of dreams sank deep under the water. And sank many dreams and took many lives of many people who had a dream of having a better life on their destination but then it ended their life just like that. Truly you can’t predict life when it is about to end. As the song about to end “And my heart will go on and on” Jack and the many people who died on the ship will always be remembered.

Titanic is really a heart wrenching movie and it catch really many hearts of people and still popular nowadays. This story exposes things in the world such as unfair judgements, discriminations and mistreatment of the poor. Titanic is a form of movie that enlightened our minds to see what’s happening around us according on the status of your life you will be judge and treated. Truly the love of Jack is truly amazing that lead to sacrificing his own life just to save her. It is a really great movie and really shows how people treat people according on their status in life.
