Adding a Flash Movie to Your Page in Dreamweaver 8

On the Common toolbar, select the Media button. The Media Button is a pull-down menu with an icon that contains a stacked triangle, rectangle and circle. Open the pull-down menu and select the Flash option.

After selecting the proper option, use the Select File dialogue box to locate the SWF file you plan to insert in your page. If you are working in Code view, you will see an tag set enclosing a block of code. Your SWF file will be referenced in the code block. If you are working in Design view, Dreamweaver will show a gray rectangle with the Flash logo at the insertion point.

By default, the Flash animations you insert have no name. Naming the animation isn’t important unless you plan to use it with JavaScript. For flash animations that will interact with JavaScript, you should provide a name in the textbox to the right of the Flash icon in the Properties panel below the Code or Design window.

Other properties of your Flash animation can be altered in the Properties panel. The size of your Flash animation is captured in the W and H boxes. This size is determined at the time the SWF file is created, but your Flash animation can be scaled here, if desired.

Dreamweaver also provides a hook to the Flash program itself, provided that it is installed on your computer. If so, you can use this button to access the original FLA file to make any quick changes you like. If you edit the original FLA file, Dreamweaver will replace your existing SWF file with the new one. To play your movie within the Design view, press the Play button.

You may set the Flash animation to play automatically when the user visits the page by checking the Autoplay preference. Likewise, you may loop the Flash animation by checking the Loop preference. If download speed is of concern, you may alter the quality of the Flash animation. Lower quality animations load faster. High quality animations will take more time to load. If you’re not sure what download capabilities your users will have, you may use an auto low or auto high setting, which starts out low (or high) and alters the runtime quality of the movie based on the user’s actual bandwidth.

V space and H space entries control how much padding appears around the Flash movie. This control has no impact on the size of the movie itself. If you want to scale the movie, you can use the W and H boxes described earlier. Use the Bg button to choose a colour for the padding. The Reset Size button will return your Flash movie to its original size.
