Critical Thinking: Is It Easy For The Media To Manipulate People’s Emotions?

It has been said that the mainstream media doesn’t need to prove that what they sell is the truth in order to influence people; the only thing that it needs to do is to make sure that people see the information. What this comes down to is that once someone has been exposed to a certain view, it can end being seen as the truth.

Like a sponge, their mind will have absorbed what they have seen, with it having an effect on how they perceive the world. This information won’t have been held at a distance and scrutinized by the critical faculties; it will have just gone straight in.

The Power of Repetition

What will help with this process is that so many news sources say the same thing and these news sources have their information (propaganda) everywhere. So, through having the same views endlessly drummed into their brain from all directions, there is going to be no reason for their conscious mind to question anything.

This part of them can say that if what they are being told is not the truth, why do so many news sources say the same thing? Furthermore, the fact that so many people have the same views can also be seen as further evidence.

The First Part

Naturally, living in an environment or an ‘echo chamber’ that is saturated with the same views is going to have a strong effect on someone’s mind, but there is more to it than this. What this source of information also does to bypass someone’s critical faculties is to focus on the emotional part of their being.

The last thing this source of information wants is for people to question what they are told and to think for themselves. Certain words and pictures can then be used to tap into the emotional part of their being, thereby getting their thinking brain out of the way.

An Analogy

One way to get an idea of what takes place is to imagine that someone’s thinking brain is their security system, while their emotional brain is the part where their jewels are held. In the same way that valuable items in a building would be extremely vulnerable if the security was to go down, their inner being will be just as vulnerable without their minds ability to discern what is or what isn’t true.

The gates to their own inner kingdom will be open, setting them up to be taken advantage of. And, once this part of them has been breached, their inner world will be controlled by the mainstream media.

A Puppet

This source of information can then tell them to jump and it won’t be long before their feet are off the ground. They are then going to be an individual, but they will be behaving as though they are merely an extension of something or someone else.

Along with having the ability to control they feel; they will also have the ability to control how they behave, too. Clearly, the media is not solely interested in controlling how people feel; they also want to control how they behave.

A Big Difference

Just as a marketer knows, this source knows that the best way to influence someone’s behaviour is to influence their emotions. Simply talking to the rational part of their being is unlikely to get the ball moving.

Focusing on their thinking brain may work from time to time, but focusing on their emotional brain will be far more fruitful. In a way, tapping into someone’s emotional brain and bypassing their thinking brain turns them from an adult into a child.

Another Form of Abuse

The difference, of course, is that while an emotionally driven child can’t do much, an emotionally driven adult can become a valuable foot soldier. After all, this source of information doesn’t just want someone to feel a certain way for no reason; they want them to feel a certain way to go along with an agenda that is usually hidden.

This doesn’t mean that this source of information won’t put forward something that needs to take place; what it means is that it is likely to be a small part of what is actually going on and what is put forward can be nothing more than a lie. One can then happily go along with something, believing that it is the right thing to do – only to be enslaved by it as time goes by.

It’s Easy

However, although it would be easy to say that the mainstream media are masters when it comes to influencing how people feel and controlling their behaviour, there is more to it than this. What gives this source of information the upper hand is that it is often the exception as opposed to the rule for someone to have a good understanding of their emotions and for this part of them to be in balance.

There are a number of reasons as to why someone wouldn’t have a good relationship with their emotions, and the fact that the so-called education system largely ignores this part of someone’s being doesn’t help. This shouldn’t be seen as a surprise though as critical thinking is rarely taught either, with there being a greater focus on teaching someone what to think, not how to think.

A Sitting Duck

If, then, someone doesn’t have the ability to think critically and their emotional self is out of control, they are going to be wide open to being exploited by the mainstream media. Yet, while this source of information is the focus here, it is simply one arm of an ever bigger operation.

Someone like this could be in a lot of inner conflict, meaning their emotional self could often take over. As a result of this, it is going to be a challenge for them to operate as a whole human being.

A Few Reasons

So, if someone finds that the mainstream media has the ability to trigger shame, guilt, fear and/or a sense of helplessness within them, it can show that they are carrying trauma. This could be due to what they have experienced as an adult and/or it could go back to what took place during their early years.

It could go back even further, with it being the result of what has been passed down from their ancestors or what they went through in a past life. Irrespective of why it is, having this trauma within them will make it harder for them to think clearly.

Conclusion

Seeing the media as the perpetrator and someone as a victim would be easy, but this would mean that there is nothing that can be done. The reality is that the only way that the media can do this is if someone lets them.

To stop this from happening, it is going to be essential for someone to heal their emotional wounds and the trauma that is within them. This is something that can take place with the assistance of a therapist or a healer.
