Dental Health and Recontouring Teeth

Dental Health and Recontouring Teeth

A procedure where little amount of the tooth enamel is taken to modify the length, form, and its exterior part is known as odonplasty, enameloplasty, reducing or trimming. Recontouring or reshaping as it is commonly called is usually done to enhance ones appearance through establishment of social agreement and poise by flashing a smile. It is the most conventional type of cosmetic dentistry. A pain-free and swift procedure in which the outcomes can be obtain right away.

Candidates for Recontouring

Recontouring is an efficient way to correct slight flaws which includes:

1. Repair of tooth fragments
2. Leveling of lumps and hollows in the tooth
3. Fix minor uneven structure of the tooth caused by several irregular teeth.
4. Adjust the pointed teeth on the side of the mouth known as canine.

Taking out narrow crack, fissure or overlaps stuck between teeth where there is build up of tartar and plaque is another work of art for recontouring; improving the whole dental health. However, it is not advisable if extensive fracture, cracked or damaged to the teeth is noted. It must be remembered that recontouring is not an alternative to bonding or veneers, but works well if combined with the two procedures. Your doctor knows what's good for you.

Steps for Recontouring

Preliminary test

An X-ray examination will determine if recontouring will be a good option for you. This will also take note of the size and site of the tooth's midpoint (pulp) confining the nerves and blood vessels. In a situation wherein the pulp is nearest to the tooth's surface, viability of recontouring is so poor that other procedure such as bonding or veneer will be favored in lieu of recontouring.

The procedure

The dentist will make use of sanding disc or a fine diamond bur to scrape off little amounts of the enamel tooth. Anesthesia is not necessary since the pulp will not be disturbed. A sand paper is use to contour and smoothen the sides. To complete the process, the dentist will buff the teeth. Recontouring alone does not need follow-up checkups unless if it was combined with bonding or veneers.

Risks to Consider

The tooth enamel is irreplaceable, so when choosing recontouring, it should be carefully thought of. One risk noted for is how thick the enamel would be. Too much recontouring will reveal the layer underneath the enamel called dentin layer. If this is so, the tooth will probably be sensitive to hot, cold, and sweets.
