MMA Training at Home – How to Set Up Your Own MMA Training Gym at Home

Getting started with MMA training at home is a great choice. Before committing yourself to a gym or before starting to take classes, you should build up a solid base by doing MMA training at home. There have been top mixed martial arts athletes who started their training out in their own home.

Setting up your own MMA gym in your home:

Former UFC champion Rich Franklin began his training in a small shed in his backyard. Creating your own gym doesn't have to be, and really shouldn't be, too difficult or complex.

Start with the basics:

You want to first get a heavy bag. Make sure it is a long bag which enables you to perform both strikes and kicks. You can choose either a hanging or free standing type bag. You'll need bag gloves as well, along with wrist wraps (some gloves have decent wraps included in the glove).

Next you need to figure out your cardio. This is going to vary individual to individual, some prefer a particular exercise machine, bike or treadmill, while others can get good cardio without the use of any equipment, ie doing sprints. Whichever you choose, cardio training is a vital aspect of mixed martial arts training, so set aside space, if space is needed.

Kettlebells or weights. For your strength conditioning, consider kettlebells. These are great for MMA training at home as they take up no space and are incredibly effective for developing strength. Another option is a traditional weight training setup.

Instruction. Since you are training in your own home you most likely aren't going to have a coach or instructor showing you how to train. Don't worry, as their are instruction manuals out there which are great for learning how to train on your own, in your own space. Getting some sort of proper instruction is vital for getting the best results from training. You don't want to waste your time with ineffective and improper routines.
