Sony HDR – FX7 HDV Review

The Sony FX7 HDV High Definition Camcorder makes hi def video production available to the masses. Prices constantly come down on all technology and the camcorder market is no exception. While just a few years ago, hi def recording was complicated and out of the reach of the average consumer, Sony has improved the technology and made using it possible for those of us without the degree from MIT.

Sony’s new FX7 3-CMOS camcorder has all the manual features required by the professional videographer but is simple enough to be used by the serious hobbyist or the dad on the soccer sidelines. Hunters, birders, sports lovers and professionals will all appreciate what the FX7 can do and how easy it is to do it.

The first thing you’ll notice when you begin using the Sony FX7 how sharp and clear the LCD screen is. It shows vivid detail you probably haven’t seen in a camcorder monitor.

The zoom and focus wheels are easy to use and very intuitive. The faster you turn the zoom ring, the faster it zooms. What could be simpler?

Out of doors in bright light, the image came across bright and clear on the color monitor. What a pleasure to be able to see the colors without having to hold a hand over the LCD screen in bright sunlight.

Since the HDR-FX7 records video in high-definition, you can dual record still images at the same time. This is just another example of this little beauty’s versatility.

The Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens provides a high-quality 20x optical zoom which maintains image clarity and color while reducing glare and flare. Perfect for that dad who wants to isolate his daughter on the soccer field.

Now for the downside. While the Sony FX7 performs magnificently in low light, it would have be nice if there was a built in light. Light attachments are available. Also, while the onboard microphone records decent stereo sound, an option of plugging in a better quality microphone using XLR would have been a great feature.

When all is said and done, Sony has produced another winner. The FX7 is lightweight and easy to use. It is simple enough for casually consumer but has features that will satisfy the professional.
